So Far (It's Alright)
Yeah so far, it's alright, alright, baby (4x)Yeah it's the way we are
We were smoking by 11 and knocking 'round town
Beat 'em ups on my arm
We were never good at selling
Couldn't cut downAnd I stay with my father, while his friends die of heart attacks
He's got a heart made of stone but he never gets cold because the sun's always on his backI used to think you were cool and I believed you had a wonderful vision,
But I soon found out you're a terrible friend and your mother's on the television
Give's a go on your bike, how you getting along with your life
It's alright, yeah it's alrightYeah so far, it's alright, alright, baby (4x)"Oh well I'm coming to the end of 23" she said, "is that alright?"
"And it's coming to the end of you and me" she said, "is that alright?"
And how can you complain about life and talk about being bored
If you just sit at Pete's house playing video games, doing sniff that you can't afford?I can't be picking up in the town
So get me one off Adam if he's sorting you out
I don't really care what all your friends are about,
I was always looking for a way to get out,
A true reflection of the size of your house,
A silver spoon and a zoot in your mouth
But you're alright, yeah it's alrightYeah so far, it's alright, alright, baby (4x)So here we are, it's quarter to 11
We're knocking 'round town
Pushing in, in the bar, you can cry until 11, it's a quarter of an hour
And why stay if you hate it so much?
You think you're well cool,
You just write about sex and killing yourself and how you hardly ever went to schoolDon't you wanna take me up in the clouds,
Pretend that I'm the one and you can show me about,
She was talking marriage so we had to get out,
Now he's making up for it by sleeping about
The ultimatum's a ridiculous joke
I'm gonna pick the option that allows me to smoke
But I'm alright, yeah it's alrightYeah so far, it's alright, alright, baby (4x)
This first stanza is about the artists shenanigans he's gotten into with his friends. He mentions smoking by 11, which may be referring to his age, but it is likely the time considering the repetition of 11 later in the song. Mentioned in the next line "Beat 'em ups" is a slang term for a girl who is used for sexual favors. He then talks about his issue with doing the drugs he's supposed to sell. Noting this, "Beat 'em ups" could also be a metaphor for "heroin arm."Here, he talks about his father. In the second line, "the sun's always on his back" is a metaphor for his concern for father and his unhealthy habits, which is also irony considering Healy's heroin addiction. The first 2 lines of this are likely said by his former girlfriend, there is use of assonance with the O sound in the 3rd line.o
o
oThis line is from his girlfriend, the use of "is that alright?" shows that she still cares for him, it's not clear who says the next lines, but there is more "O" assonance used, and it is a call out to an addictive personality.oThe first two lines of this are referencing a drug deal, with more "O" assonance, and repetition of "out." The silver spoon line is a metaphor for wealth, while it is also used literally for heroin.oooThere is repetition of 11pm, these lines are another argument between the couple.ooo
"Take me up in the clouds" is a reference to getting high, he is talking about her drug-induced confession and ultimatum which he turns down to keep his freedom.
In “So Far (It’s Alright)” Matty Healy tells a story of his life experiences from his early 20s. Healy recounts his rebellious activities “’round town” (6, 36), in a first-person perspective and recites things said by his girlfriend at the time.
If I Believe You
I've got a God-shaped hole, that's infected
And I'm petrified of being alone
It's pathetic, I knowAnd I toss and I turn in my bed
It's just like I lost my head (lost my head)And if I believe you,
Would that make it stop if I told you I need you?
Is that what you want?
And I'm broken and bleeding, and begging for help.
And I'm asking you, Jesus: show yourselfI thought I'd met you once or twice,
But that was just because the dabs were nice
And opening up my mind
Showing me consciousness is primary in the universe
And I had a revelationI'll be your child if you insist
I mean, if it was you that made my body
You probably shouldn't have made me atheistI'm a lesbian kiss
I'm an evangelist
And "If you don't wanna go to hell then, Miss,
You better start selling this."And if I believe you,
Would that make it stop if I told you I need you?
Is that what you want?
And I'm broken and bleeding, and begging for help.
And I'm asking you, Jesus: show yourself. If I'm lost then how can I find myself? (9x)
The first line is a metaphor for the lack of confidence in a higher entity, it is like a wound that won't heal.oooThere is an alliteration with the "B."o
This part is about his experience thinking he met God while under the influence of drugs, a "dab" is a term often used for weed but can be used for harder drugs.oThis is about the irony of him being referred to as God's Children or creation when he is an atheist.o
The lesbian kiss is personification and a symbolism for sin. Calling himself an evangelist is ironic as he does the complete opposite of what one would do.oooThe repetition in the last lines is rhetorical as he knows that no matter how much he pleads, he won't receive an answer.
The second poem “If I Believe You” is a very emotional song about the struggle of belief in a religion, specifically Christianity. He wants to believe in a higher power but has a troubled relationship with God. The lyrics are a directed cry for help to God, while also critiquing the hypocrisy of sin (“I’m a lesbian kiss” (20)), organized religion and televangelism.
Love It If We Made It
We're f---ing in a car
Shooting heroin
Saying controversial things
Just for the hell of it
Selling melanin and then
Suffocate the black man
Start with misdemeanours
And we'll make a business out of them
And we can find out the information
Access all the applications
That are hardening positions
Based on miscommunication
Oh! F--k your feelings
Truth is only hearsay
We're just left to decay
Modernity has failed us
And I'd love it if we made it (4x)And poison me, daddy
I got the Jones right through my bones
Write it on a piece of stone
A beach of drowning three-year olds
Rest in peace Lil Peep
The poetry is in the streets
Jesus save us!
Modernity has failed us
And I'd love it if we made it (6x)
Tell me something I didn't knowConsultation degradation
Fossil fuelling masturbation
Immigration liberal kitsch
Kneeling on a pitch
"I moved on her like a bitch!"
Excited to be indicted
Unrequited house with seven pools
"Thank you, Kanye, very cool!"
The war has been incited
And guess what? You're all invited
And you're famous
Modernity has failed usAnd I'd love it if we made it (3x)
Tell me something I didn't know
And I'd love it if we made it
The lyrics start out with a reference to the artists drug addiction, and a setting where the conversation in the song is taking place.
The next lines are about the recent rise in appropriation and profit made off of black culture by non-black people. The applications and positions are about the internets ability to lie and twist words, while also being able to use it to find the truth.
There is assonance with the "A" in this line.o"Truth is only hearsay" is a mockery of hypocritical Republican ideologies.oJones is a slang term used for heroin, and written in stone is referring to a tombstone message, meaning the "poison me" line is about Healy's drug use.
The next 2 lines do not have much connection other than just different references to shocking events that happened around the time the song was written.
oooThe first 5 lines use cacophony which adds to the uncomfortableness of the song, The two quotes said are also allusions, they are both Donald Trump quotes.
The war is about the constant battles people are still fighting over discrimination. The famous part is about how easy it is to gain popularity, especially if you're problematic.
oo
Love It If We Made It is also written from a first person narrative perspective, it is centered around mostly current political events and social issues. It keeps a consistently angry tone that is used to grab the listeners attention.
People
Wake up, wake up, wake up
It's Monday morning and we've only got a thousand of them left
Well, I know it feels pointless and you don't have any money
But we're all just gonna try our f--ing best
Well, my generation wanna f--k Barack Obama
Living in a sauna with legal marijuanaWell, girls, food, gear
I don't like going outside, so bring me everything herePeople like people
They want alive people
The young surprise people
Stop f---ing with the, f---ing with the (3x)Wake up, wake up, wake up
We are appalling and we need to stop just watching s--t in bed
And I know it sounds boring and we like things that are funny
But we need to get this in our f--king heads
The economy's a goner, republic's a banana, ignore it if you wannaF--k it, I'm just gonna get girls, food, gear
I don't like going outside, so bring me everything herePeople like people
They want alive people
The young surprise people
Stop f--king with the, f--king with the kids (7x)
Begins with repetition to highlight the importance of the song.
A thousand more Monday's is referring to the end of the world.
Next is a callout to everyone, and the laziness that we have all grown into because of the way the world is adapting to new technologies.
"Living in a sauna" is a metaphor for the current climate crisis.Girls, food, and gear (slang term for hard drugs) are all addictive. The next line is another sarcastic callout towards things like delivery services. The chorus is about the newer generations and how they could make a real change for society.o
This is another line trying to bring the bad behaviors and habits to attention, like a phone addiction.
The next lines are obviously about the economy, and banana republic which is a political term and company.
People is a first person perspective song that mostly focuses on the end of the world and/or the future and an aggressive approach at addressing climate change.
Looking For Somebody (To Love)
Somebody running for the field
Somebody should have stayed home
Somebody picking out the body of somebody they were getting to know
Somebody lacking in desire
The type you just don't f--k
A supreme gentleman with a gun in his hand looking for somebody to loveLooking for somebody to love (2x)I wanna show him he's a bitch
I wanna f--k him up good
I wanna smash the competition, go and kill it like a man should
"You gotta show me how to push
If you don't want a shove"
Are the words of a young man already damned looking for somebody to loveLooking for somebody to love
Looking for somebody to love
Oh, they ran, oh, they ran, you should have seen how they ran when
I was looking for somebody to love
You should have seen it, man, I was all, "Bang, bang, bang, bang!" (x2)Somebody lying on the field
Somebody crying on the phone
Somebody picking up the body of somebody they were getting to know
Maybe we're lacking in desire
Maybe it's just all f----d
But the boy with the plan and the gun in his hand was looking for somebody to loveLooking for somebody to love
Looking for somebody to love
Oh, they ran, oh, they ran, you should have seen how they ran when
I was looking for somebody to love
You should have seen it, man, I was all, "Bang, bang, bang, bang!"
Looking for somebody to loveLooking for somebody to love
The repetition of "Somebody" at the beginning of the first 4 lines is an anaphora. There is dark imagery that describes a scene of a school shooting.
The next lines are about the common theme of school shooters being young men who did not fit in, usually bullied in some way.o
oThis part is about toxic masculinity, the harsh treatment that men give each other to prove their manliness and assert domination over other men, and also adds that men who commit these acts already have an underlying mental illness.ooo
"Love" is used in this context as an oxymoron, because murder is not loving or a form of affection.
"Bang!" is an onomatopoeia.More dark imagery, and also changes some of the lyrics from the start of the song to show that the person running for the field had been shot.
The lyrics after have also been changed, it is kind of like a reflection of the first couple of lines.
The final song "Looking For Somebody (To Love)" is a song that is written in first person through the perspective of a school shooter. The song uses a happy tone as a sarcastic response to American's lack of empathy towards gun violence.
